The exact services offered are community living center-specific. They are nursing homes that contract with the VA to provide care for veterans who meet VA eligibility for such care. When one thinks of VA long-term nursing care, it is Community nursing homes that generally come to mind, as opposed to community living centers, which are more suited for short-term rehabilitative care. In addition to 24-hour skilled nursing care, community nursing homes provide therapies and social work services. Short-term rehabilitative services, specialized dementia care / Alzheimer’s care, and hospice / palliative care might also be available.
Sometimes they can also be in a separate building within the vicinity of the medical center. To participate in the State Veterans Home program, VA must formally recognize and certify a facility as a State Veterans Home. In Medicaid-certified nursing homes, generally a select number of beds are set aside for Medicaid-funded residents. These nursing homes are usually also Medicare-certified, meaning they accept Medicare-funded residents. However, while Medicaid will pay for long-term nursing home care, Medicare will only pay for short-term care. However, the VA may determine that you require contract nursing home care, in which case you would also be eligible, provided that you are currently in a VA hospital or are on the receiving end of hospital care. Additionally, you could also qualify if you are an active member of the Armed Forces who is in need of nursing care and would qualify as a disabled veteran on the day of discharge.

Contract Nursing Home Care
Want to sign up for long-term or short-term home care through VA benefits? You may be eligible for nursing home care if you meet the following criteria put forth by the VA. However, to qualify for nursing home care, you must meet a specific set of criteria.
In each setting, a trained professional will provide care and support with daily tasks 24 hours a day. Veterans who are not in the priority groups are technically limited to six months of care, but this may be reduced to 30 to 60 days if resources are limited. Veterans in the priority groups are technically entitled to unlimited free care, but again may receive shorter stays due to a lack of funding and resources to accommodate them. The VA may pay all or part of the nursing home costs for disabled and elderly veterans. VA offers ongoing internal training opportunities to employees at all employment levels, from mandatory developmental programs to competitive opportunities. Wherever life may lead, VA employees can seek employment at a VA facility with an open position and transfer with no loss of benefits.
This is probably the most common approach to entering a nursing home. Persons whose countable assets exceed the Medicaid limit must spend down their assets on nursing home care until their countable assets no longer exceed Medicaid’s asset limit. For example, most states have a Medicaid asset limit for a single person of $2,000. If an individual has $15,000 in countable assets, they must spend down or pay for their own nursing home care for about two months until they have only $2,000 remaining. Entering a nursing home on “private pay” (spending one’s own money out-of-pocket) is much easier than entering with Medicaid as the payer. Once the resident has entered the nursing home, they can easily switch to Medicaid as the payer when they become Medicaid-eligible.
